The Justinguitar Beginners Course...
A capo is a very useful little device that enables you to use your chords further up the neck of your guitar to make all the chords sound higher. It changes the key of the song and is great for singers to be able to move a song into a key that suits your voice. Also great to simplify some songs that would otherwise require barre chords, it doesn't work with all songs (some you just have to learn barre chords) but for many tunes, this is a great option.
They are not just for beginners either. Some intermediate players seem to think they are a beginner tool, but they become more and more interesting the longer you play, because it changes the possibilities which is also fun. So don't be put off by any cap snobs, they don't know what they are talking about.
There seems to be a lot of debate about the correct pronunciation of the word. I say it cap-o, others say Kay-po, it seems to be a US vs English thing, but who cares? Not me!

Capo stuff...
It is important that you put it just behind the fret (the same as you should be doing with your fingers too!) or you will get lots of buzzing sounds.
A great idea is to make a "Capo Chart" showing the open chords and what chord they become with the capo on each fret. You will probably only have to make the chart once, because once you have done it you will understand it all and not have to use it! And if you have to reference it once in a while, that is ok, but like everything else, you have to try and get all this info into your memory!
Next up we are going to have a little look at basic guitar set ups in BC-164 • "Action" and basic guitar set up guide

Justinguitar Beginner's Products
I have four great beginners products that will help you make the most of this course. Most popular is The Justinguitar Beginners Songbook which contains 100 songs arranged by difficulty that perfectly match up with each level of the course. Many people told me they like books more than web pages so we've made The Justinguitar Beginners Course Book (comes with 2 x CD's too!) and many people found being online to watch the videos a pain so we offer The Justinguitar Beginners Course DVD which also means you can watch the vids in much better quality. Together they complete the whole online course and are perfect when there is no internet connection!! Also very popular is Practical Music Theory for those that like to know what they are doing and why!! It covers very basic theory in an easy to digest way and puts it onto the guitar! They are all available in Bundle Packs too where you can save a bunch of money!! Buying products and making donations help keep the site free and growing! :) |
