Unless I'm missing something, according to your "How to find notes on the guitar neck" shows moving up 2 strings and up 3 frets to hit the same note as opposed to up 2 strings and 2 frets in your "How to use octaves on the guitar."

Which one is the correct one?

If you are referring to lessons...

TB-007
TB-008

They are identical.

I think you may be mis-reading one of the diagrams. It's over 2, up 2, on both.

I was referring to those lessons but I was referring to the 5th and 6th strings.

Where it says:
Quote
For example, to find a note on the 3rd or 4th string, simply put your third finger on the note you want to know and put your first finger in the relative position shown by the diagrams above (in this case two frets back and two strings over). The note under your first finger will be on the 5th or 6th string and you should know the note name!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the statement.

Ok I looked at it again and indeed I did misunderstand the statement.  I'm all clear now thanks for the help.

they say 3 shapes and show 3 pictures, but two are the same... is this a mistake or no? if you look at the A on the 2nd fret 3rd string.. there is no way to figure this note out with the shapes given.

am i misunderstanding something here?

It's no biggee, but yes, with those patterns you're on your own to figure out the notes on the first two frets of the D and G strings. There is a pattern to find those four notes from other known roots, but it's easier just to memorize them. This method is predicated on your having memorized all the note-names for the low-E and A strings, so four more notes shouldn't be too hard.
