this is kind of technique question, but when in first postion lets say, should i be guiding my fret hand with my arm a little so my fingers hit square over the frets, and not at an awkward angle? Also, i feel my thumb is putting a lot of presure on the back of the neck, and if i dont do that, than the pressure is at the bone leading up to my index. Are these pressures ok?

im not exactly sure where to ask this question but i think this is the closest place. when someone says "key of" g, c, e, etc, im having trouble what those are. i understand that by using the chords for that a certain key can help with jamming with someone because one guy can play the chords and ther other play a scales for that key or somthing.

if my question sounds wack. im sorry. im just learning what all this music theory is and im getting confused. thank you.

It might help if at first you look at keys in terms of the individual notes that compose each key rather than in the context of chord composition.  The key of a song is basically which scale you will be playing on.  Major scales have the same interval between each scale degree, but the notes of the scale change depending on where you start your scale.  For example a scale in the key of C major would go C-D-E-F-G-A-B.  Songs in the key of C would normally start on C and end on C, and the other scale notes would be used throughout.

Hope that helps

well i guess what im trying to get at is how keys are used to jam with other people. after going through so many lessons and rereading them i finally figured out that if someone says key of g it means any chords that are inside of the scale shapes. is that right?

Pretty much.  When you play a chord that is in a certain key, all the notes in that chord will be within the scale of that key.  When you are jamming you would usually play within the same key as the other person.

This is explained in the Major Scale - How And Why vid - check that out.

Chords come from scales.

Know the chords that come from a scale and you know what scale to use for lead guitar improvisation.

For example.

Chords in the key of G are G, C, D, Am, Bm and Em. Use the G Major scale to play over these chords and it will sound fat.

BUT this is the wrong place to ask this - so please don't continue this thread here. Ask on the Major Scale - How And Why thread PLEASE Smiley

It's a way to get to know your fretboard, so you can play any key in pretty much any position.
