I'm completely lost when it comes to this lesson. I'm so confused with the pictures and when I'm supposed to strum up or down. :S

Down strum is the thing that sorta looks like a staple with a thick top (didn't know any better way to describe it) It's right above the tab. then the up strokes are the "V" like things. And again they are above the tab.
That should help you.
