What's the thing justin does in the chorus, it's not part of the song but he called it a rock and roll 6th.  does anyone know where i can learn to play those?

He plays a G chord but muting the A B and high E strings so you get kind of a G power chord and then he adds a "6th" (a 6th of a G major scale if I got it right) which would be 2nd fret of a D string. So you play 3rd fret low E string open D and G strings with muted A, B and high E and then put your first finger on 2nd fret D strings and you get 3rd fret E string, muted A, 2nd fret D, open G and muted two highest strings. Culdn't figure it for a while too. I hope it's clear enough for you (and that I'm right Tongue).

I'll add the solo to the to do list, but it may be a while off... I have transcribed it somewhere... will try and dig it out next time I am looking in my transcription box!

Doing the tab takes ages and right now I just don't have time, but again it is on the to do list! sorry...

I'm frustrated because I can't tell what that thir part of the main riff is. I know your second finger 3rd fret 6th string but I can't for the life of me tell what else he's doing!

Hello all,

I couldn't help but notice Justin's comment above the song:
Quote
"I don't like what it stands for at all "
Up until then I hadn't heard any criticism on the song, so I did a little digging up... Apparently, the song is criticised for
being racist!! That surprised me a little bit. After some googling I ended up to this (http://www.thrasherswheat.org/jammin/lynyrd.htm) very interesting article which explains a little bit about what's going on. From what they say, it is actually
one of the most misunderstood songs ever!!

Sorry if my post is irrelevant to the "help" but I found it quite interesting and it's always nice to know a few thing about the
song you're playing (especially if it's one so widely debated).

Cheers,
George

This is a tab of my favorite riff in the song.  I think there's a slight difference in the last part of the riff, when I compare how Justin taught it and the 1974 album cut.  Plus I think it's a bit easier to play because you play A-A-D-B strings (essentially in consecutive order) instead of (A-A-A-B)

As Justin taught it:
E------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------
G--------7-7----------5-5------------0-----
D------7-7-7----------5-5------------------
A--8-9-------9----6-7-----7----0-1-2-------
E---------------------------------------3--

How I think I hear it from the 1974 recording
E------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------
G--------7-7----------5-5------------0-----
D------7-7-7----------5-5----------0-------
A--8-9-------9----6-7-----7----0-2---------
E---------------------------------------3--
