Great lesson, it's very helpful. I play classical and I have just learnt a song which fits perfectly to the melodic scale explanation and maybe you could use it in the video as an example. It is called Bourre, by JS Bach, you probably know this one. Wish you the best! C ya

yes question... Huh
just to understand.

If I have a song in Amin I can play C major scale "G shape" starting from 5th fret, 6th string. (Aeolian mode)

If I have a song in Dmin, I can play again Cmajor scale in D shape from 10th fret 6th string. (Dorian mode)

If I have a song in Emin, I can play again Cmajor scale in C shape starting from the open E string. (Phrigian mode)

Of course I can play all three modes on each song starting from different positions.
Correct?

The position is not important at all. Makes no difference.

What you are talking about is Modes, not the differences between the minor scales that I was explaining in this lesson!

So you will probably be interested in the series I am starting today, all about modes - see the Scales area of the web site!

On Perfect cadences...

Does a perfect cadence have to be V7 -> I or i or is V -> I also considered perfect, as long as there's a melodic leading tone to tonic resolution? I took a lot of music theory in school, but that was 15 years ago, and most of the analysis stuff like this has seeped away from me.  Shocked

Hi Justin!

Really enjoyed watching that video, gave me a lot of insight into things I'm playing.

Just a quick question.

When you were talking about what teh harmonic minor, and melodic minor and pure minor, etc. You were in the key of A minor yes? Or the relative C major.

However, when you go into the area about cadences, was that in a different key?

cause it ends off on E7 to A, which aren't chords of the Am or C scales? Am i missing something here cause I'm a little confused. I'm not near a guitar so I can't really experiment, but just trying to understand that in my head.

Unless I'm mistaken there is no lesson for the natural minor scale. Any chance you could put one up, or would one of you kind souls point me in the right direction please?
