I looked into open E tuning and found that it was recommend to use light strings for this, due to the need to tune up. Could the savvier members please comment on this?
I own a Guild GAD50 strung with 11's and wondered if it would be safe to use this tuning without buggering up my action (suck it see is not what I am looking for in an answer).
This was a brilliant lesson, and either Justin has become a dab hand at lip-synch or he has developed a pretty impressive singing voice.

If you don't want to tune your guitar to open E , I've always played it like this ->

It sounds the same imho , but Justins version is the accurate one obviously  Grin

Thanks for the reply and info, bickb, much appreciated.
As for accuracy I'm sure songs may be played in different ways and still be considered 'accurate'. I found this clip showing a different fingering.

I've been looking for a good version of this for years, I love the Black Crowes (they're brilliant live) & Justins version is going to be the one to learn !?!?
I was always worried about re-tuning to a non standard like open E but for this i'll give it a go on my Electro Acoustic, think it's got 10's on so it shouldnt do any harm ........... I hope ..........

Justin, any advice on open tunings & how it can affect the guitar? (he says, dashing off to do a search through the threads before anyone shoots him down !?!?)  Wink

Awesome lesson Justin. On the tuning up to open E thing, I have the same guitar as flyhead and actually use .12's on mine, but I don't believe the tuning up causes any long term problems. I wouldn't recommend leaving the guitar like that over night or for extended periods, but for a short time it's fine. You can see a slight increase in the action when it's tuned up, but it returns to normal when you're back in standard. I guess if you're really worried you could tune it a half step down from open E and capo the first fret.

Also, the tab for the intro isn't up yet. Don't know if Justin forgot the link or if he just hasn't gotten around to putting it up, which isn't a problem, the vids are plenty clear.

Hello Justin, Everyone,
This is my first post, and my second one will be in the "Thank you Justin" section. Smiley  On the issue of the open "e" tuning, if you're worried about neck stress I have seen it suggested to use Drop "D" and then capo the first fret....voila Open E.  I see this is supprted by several Black Crows videos.  Hope this helps.

Actually, if you tuned to drop D and capoed the second fret (not first, that would be Eb) you would be in drop E tuning. But you were heading in the right direction as open D tuning (DADF#AD) capoed at the 2nd fret would be open E (EBEG#BE) and would work be the exact same as regular open E. You may have meant that in the first place instead of drop D, I don't know. But yeah, if you are worried about to much tension that would work perfectly.

Ah, yes that's it.  I just got home from work and tried it and you are correct.   Sorry for the bad info, was just going on memory but should have known better Embarrassed.  However, in this tuning, the harmonics don't sound as nice as in the open E tuning.  Maybe, having something to do with the effectively shorted strings using the capo at the 2nd fret.
Thanks for the correction>

Sorry the intro TAB is up now, I kept forgetting the copy it from the studio computer.

I'm not much good at miming, and I was surprised that it sounded ok, cos that is not an easy song to sing, but I have been working on my vocals a lot lately, getting ready to record my album! Wink

I didn't have any problems with tuning up for the Open E, and I use 13 gauge strings on that acoustic (and 12's on Jessie).

Glad y'all diggin it, it's a great song! J
