Can anyone please tell me if any one of these two guitars are any good for a beginner. If there not could you please leave a link to a good cheap one I could buy over the internet. I'm working on a budget so it has to be cheap. It doesn't matter if its new or used I just want a decent, cheep first acoustic or electric guitar. Thanks a million.

honestly the chances of that being a decent acoustic are pretty slim, if your budget is really low I would get an used squier strat (not very used. just an "I bought it and gave up after 2 weeks" used) and have set up by a pro that probably guarantees you a decent playing guitar

I have just started to play, and the guitar I bought is a Yamaha F310.  It is basically the cheapest Yamaha accoustic (steel strings) I could find.  I got it from Costco complete with cover, spare strings, electronic tuner, picks and a rubbish DVD all for about £80.

It is a brilliant guitar, I love it.  Although I'm not an expert, I would recommend it to anyone.

Hello I just registered here today and I am really excited that I found this site!  Justin seems like a great guy to learn from, and it looks like this is a very active community.

I have never played guitar before and I don't own one yet.  I just watched and read BC-102 and have a couple of questions.  I would like to eventually be able to play both acoustic and electric guitar, but I guess I always thought that I should start on an acoustic.  Now I see that Justin recommends starting on an electric.  I guess my main question is, if I learn to play on an electric will I be able to pick up an acoustic and play as well?

Thanks

@ jugdish - yes you will. The strings may seem a little harder to press down but it just taes a little time to adapt.

@ eenymo - yep Yamaha do great beginner guitars.

@ close2u - now there is a good idea people!!! Wink

A Luthier is someone who makes or restores stringed instruments (IE guitars).

Hi Justin,
I bought a classical guitar as advised by my friend who played the guitar. it has got 3 nylon strings and the rest are steel. do you think i can learn with it? or if i replace the nylon strings with steel, would it get any better? or is it totally useless?

Thanks,
sridhar.

classical / nylon strung guitars have 3 nylon strings and the 3 thickest are usually metal wound

it sounds just fine as it is

Classical guitar necks are not designed to handle the tension of steel core strings. it would severely bow, if not crack the neck.
Those 3 "steel strings" have a nylon core.

You can learn on a classical, Nylon tends to be easier on the fingertips but the neck is much thicker making a number of techniques harder.
In my opinion you should learn to play on the instrument you intend to play. Classical, acoustic or electric.

KIDS!

I want to buy a guitar for an 8 year old boy (maybe his 9 year old sister would like it too).

I read the descriptions for many guitars and I am a little confused. Not all 1/2 or 3/4 guitars are recommended for the same age. Sometimes the same manufacturer recommends an 1/2 for 8-10 and a (normally bigger) 3/4 for 7-10.

So, what should I do? (Don't tell me to ask the teacher because I can't)

Thanks!
