New course looks great Justin, even though I'm a bit ahead to be doing these JUSTIN exercises I wanted to try them out but I'm not getting any sound file playback plug-in? What plug-in is it?

@Josh:
I think you need the AppleQuickTime plugin.
"QuickTime Alternative" works:

@justinguitar & his tech people:
consider using the free JW FLV Media Player, which plays in every browser on every system (using flash to play the mp3s), and is FREE as well:

@justinguitar & his tech people:

Yeah, this is really good training, great stuff.

The sound plays back fine on my mac OS X 10.4.11 with Firefox 3.0.10.

On the training page the help link at the bottom of the page is not working.

Really good way to go with this approach. Excellent addition to the site.

Yes, very nice addition indeed. I played with it a bit this morning. Great training tool.

Awesome thanks, I'm sure I had that installed? See if works when I re-install. But it does sound like a great tool, good job, looking forward to some slightly more advanced ones!

Hi Justin,

Love the new beginners course.

Just one quick question on the JUSTIN exercises.

Am I supposed to be trying to work out the chord being played without trying trying different chords on my guitar? Is the ultimate goal to be able to know each chord as soon as you hear it without having to check against a guitar?

Thanks

Neil

Yes, it is the ultimate goal, but it may take a long time, it depends on how much of an ear for music you have, and on how much you practice. If I remember right then Justin says that if you can get to the stage where you can write down the chords without picking up your guitar that is great, but that time may be a long way off if you are just starting out.

So start out trying to find the chords on your guitar, if you do not recognise them just by hearing them several times.

You will need a lot more practice than is on the course right now, and I think Justin said he does not have much time to add more exercises at the moment. So the best thing to do is either record something yourself, wait a few days until you forget what you recorded, then test yourself. Or, if you can find another guitarist, then ask them to test your chord recognition by playing random chords.

Maybe one of the more technically able people here could post some sound files of chords on this thread - not sure if this is a good idea or if it would be better to wait for Justin to put up more exercises?

Thanks royp,

That helped alot. Been trying to play guitar for a little over a year now and the whole ear training thing has always eluded me. I guess I just need to force myself to put the time in as I know its going to be extreemely useful in the long run.

Ive got a digital recorder (not good enough to use it yet BR-600, but cant help buying new guitar toys Smiley ) Started making some chord progressions to listen to and try to give myself some more exercises.

I noticed on Beginners Course section, not all the stages are showing up as "web links"?  Also, are they same as the ones in Lesson Index?

Thanks!

If you mean this page -

http://justinguitar.com/en/BC-000-BeginnersCourse.php

 - which I think you do, then I assume that the stages without web links are ones that Justin plans to do but he has not had time yet. Either that or the lessons are there but the links are not live yet.

The lesson index -

http://justinguitar.com/en/AA-000-LessonIndex.php

 - is a complete page index for the site, as far as I understand it, so if the lesson number is the same then it will be the same lesson whichever web route you go to find it. I think this is correct, if not I am sure Justin or one of the admin or mods will help you.

Bloody hell.  I got the progressions right without touching the guitar....I'm quite shocked.

I had #3 wrong - but once I hear the last D - I quickly realised that I had made an error.

Thanks for putting this up Justin - a little success goes a long way in boosting confidence!
