Hey Justin,

I was just googling a little bit for potential Stage 2 songs and unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot around, as you of course know already. One that comes close could be The Time Is Now by Moloko. According to tabs on the web, it consists mainly of Am, Dm, Em (possibly E, too) and, here's the catch, F and G. The verses seem to be mostly Dm, Em and Am. I have no way of checking if that's correct and don't know if that song is of any help, but thought it couldn't hurt to post it anyway.

Simple song for stage 2?  Maybe "Horse With No Name" by America? Sounds to my ear like a close approximation could be played w/only Em and Am.  Probably need some up/Down picking too.

The chili peppers are the practically the only music I try to play in my early stages of guitar because I want to be influenced as much as possible with that style of music and sound, and so in that process I found this:

I strongly recommend this song for your Stage 1, 2, or 3 practice beginners course, or a combination.  Personally I feel it fits in nicely at stage 2 because for me, I crossed over great to Stage 3 chords.

Actually when I was at the end of Stage 1, before any minor chords in stage 2 I started trying to teach myself this song because the amount of time between John strumming the chords was perfect for learning and as mentioned I love learning Chili Peppers songs, as well it wen't along with my 1 minute changes.  So by the time I actually came back to your Stage 2 Chords, I didn't even need to learn them because the song taught them to me. Not to mention some Stage 3 crossover chords.

On another note, that sad sound you were talking about, this song conveys it perfectly.

Anyways with all this staling, the song is "Strip my Mind" off of their last album "Stadium Arcadium", the entire song is perfect for learning, all the chords are strummed nice and slow...

From the best tab I could find:  The chords are in sequence:

--
Am   Em   F   C   Dm   Am   C   G         x2Intro
Am   Em   F   C   Dm   Am   C   G         x2Verse1
Am     C     Am                                 x1Bridge
Am     G     F                                    x3Chorus
Am   Em   F   C   Dm   Am   C   G         x1Intro
Am   Em   F   C   Dm   Am   C   G         x2Verse
Am     C     Am                                 x1Bridge
Am     G     F                                    x3Chorus
~Solo~
Am   Em   F   C   Dm   Am   C   G         x1Verse
Am     C     Am                                 x1Bridge
Am     G     F                                    x4Chorus
--

I'm sure parts of the tab are wrong, but for the most part I think there right.
As you can see all Stage 2 chords are utilized, and then as well all Stage 3 Chords with the F thrown in.
I understand that the Stage 3 Chords are harder, but personally when I was learning the song, I just focused on the ones and parts I could play more easily, got that easy quick because of the slow nature to play along, then I just found the C chord a breeze, and G not hard, and I just forced my fingers to get good at the F.  By the end I had the Stage 2 Chords Mastered, the Stage 3 Down very well, and the F was passable.
And I cannot emphasise how great it was to learn from this song because of the slow strumming. Like to me it's the perfect learning song~

Anyways thanks for reading, and Thanks Justin for the lessons!!

Greets all,

First let me say this is a great! site.  Slightly different perspective then what I'm used to.  Very cool, very useful.

From the folk side of the house there is an old song that uses just Amin, Dmin and Emin.
It's kind of a sad song, but you know there are two kinds of folk music,  Ose and morose  Grin

Here's a link to the lyrics and chords

Hello everyone !

For Stage 2 and 3 songs you might try "Om Bun" ("Good Man") from the band Sfinx. It uses all minor open chords plus the G and C chords.
This is a link to the song :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVWHGs4PaKU

Hi folks,
That raggle taggle gypsies song is brilliant. Very catchy. I'm going to learn how to play it/ Thanks JoeShmo

I had a look in Rick Rooksby's "How to write songs on guitar" book which has lists of chord sequences with song examples. According to Rick 'Move on up' by Curtis Mayfield uses a Am Dm Em turnaround.

I found the tab below uses F#m, Em, A, Bm but could work if it was transposed down 2 half steps to Em, Dm, G, Am and played with a capo and with the quick change to G removed. hmm! Certainly not ideal but a possible option.

wow this is a very good tune to learn...love this song..and its true that the intro is easy to learn because of the slow strumming....I just can't get it when it gets to the point of up down up down down up...or whatever Cheesy ( any one can give an idea of the strumming Huh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEUL48Ke98Q ) but playing the intro probably is enough for me now...
