I am having trouble getting my little finger to not touch the adjacent strings while doing the basic finger workout.

For the purpose of the exercise, should I focus on not letting my little finger touch the other strings or just keep at it until I gain more dexterity in my little finger?

This can be quite a pain in the *ss for me seeing as I have really small fingers. Tongue Hoping to see it become less of a hassle if I keep practising though.

I have the same problem. I find it nearly impossible to use my pinky on the upper string without touching lower strings.

It's all about bending your fingers enough, if you keep touching the strings, move your wrist a little 'upwards', like Justin said, that worked for me.

Do you recommend using a finger exerciser (like those a climber might use) to build strength in the fretting fingers?
I guess specific exercise on the guitar is best, but a finger exerciser is easier to take everywhere! Smiley
I think it is helping me with these finger gym techniques.

My main struggle is that pinky finger and the twisting of my wrist... for many of the strings I end up having my thumb behind the first finger and twisting my wrist a bit past where is comfortable?

Am I supposed to be giving my wrist a erm... workout of sorts?
Cause I can't figure out how to be getting that pinky figure down without contorting my wrist a bit. =x

(I guess my pinky finger is just sorta... weak... Not really sure how to strengthen it to work more on its own.)

I'm finding that regualr use of a Gripmaster finger exerciser is strengthening my pinky with noticeable results. I guess the Basic Finger Workout might not be about pinky strength, but it certainly helps if you have some independent pinky strength.

Hmm ok... well I did get a prohands grip exercise thing... Which I have been using some and it does seem to help some... Guess I just gotta keep practicing then.

And I noticed my wrist doesn't seem to get too strained till I been at it for a while.

I also have trouble with my little finger resting on the strings below the one it's pressing. I'm not quite sure I know what MelodyMake is saying moving my wrist "upwards". Does that mean moving up closer to the neck?

I'm also wondering if the position of my little finger is wrong. When I press my first three fingers down on the strings and then my little finger, it seems to shift to its side. I can't seem to get my little finger parallel to the frets as Justin's in the video. Is that normal or should I also be concentrating on straightening my little finger as it's pressing the string?

I seem to be unable to get the tip of my ring finger away from the tip of the middle finger. The knuckle bends away but the end of the finger doesn't want to move away... Any suggestions?

I also tried doing this exercise playing both the string I was pressing on and the one underneath it to check if I was muting (which I was). More practice needed!

Hey! I read somewhere that a good excercise for keeping your fingers near the strings while playing (not doing any excess movement) is to do this exercise but to only move one finger at a time. So when you got all your fingers down on your sixth string for the first time, you move just your first finger down one string, then the second and so on.

Is it good to practise like that or is something like this supposed to be saved for later and not overdo it yet? It would definitely develop individual finger agility more.

What do you guys think?
