I've discovered that at the moment my first finger isn't strong enough to play the barre F chord without putting alot of strain on my wrist. I'm going to buy a stress ball to helpstrengthen my fingers but was wondering what to practice until they are ready?
I was thinking of doing Justin's advised schedule but not doing F in the one minute changes untill my fingers are strong - Would you do this or just get right in with F? I'll still do it in the chord practice but at the moment I can't get the second string ringing out with my wrist flat and I'm worried it will lead to bad habits if I do speed changes with it as it is.
What do you think?

I don't know if it will help you, but what I did, even though it hurt, I kept going at it. I did take small breaks when it started to hurt too much, but I remembered the old saying, "No pain, No gain". Anyways, I don't know if you would want to try that or if you think you are causing serious damage to your wrist. If that's the case, try pushing your index finger against the chords using the finger itself and the thumb, not the wrist.
Or maybe you should wait for someone else to reply if that doesn't sound like good advice =P I'm not an expert or anything so yeah.

I'd recommend lollerskates method too. I couldn't get all of them to sound, but after practicing it while trying different techniques I finally got it right. I used to practice it till my fingers start hurting before stopping. Now I can do it without applying much pressure, just like any other chord. But it took me a really long time of practicing on it. I think the best way is to get it right, then try changing. Just like any chord you learned, you should first get the fingering right and then trying to change.
I suppose the only way to learn the F chord is practicing, and your first finger will develop enough strength.
