Songwriting Tips – Lead Lines & More!

After jamming, we chatted about songwriting tips. Davy asked me how he could make his song more complex and extend it. For percussion, I advised him to use a looper pedal. By strumming muted strings, you can add hits over the basic tune.

Another option is to play around with the chords. When exploring lead lines for this song, I found nice triad shapes that created a lovely movement between the chords. You can also pick out notes that work well over all the chords, repeating those over the sequence and playing with the rhythm. The song is in G Major, so you can also deliberately use the G Major scale to make solos and lead lines! :)

Songwriters: Use Your Ears!

To end, I added that songwriters often use their brains and eyes instead of their ears. Lots of the stuff I've played on records has been a happy accident – I hit a note or find a line without thinking! Always keep your ears open – they beat all else. If it sounds good, it is good! :)
