Should You Buy a Guitar Online?
I've been drooling over guitars for the last 35 years, and I have to say: buying a guitar online was never so tempting as it's nowadays. Beautiful high-resolution guitar images, irresistible descriptions, and pretty good deals are all over the Internet. But should you really buy a guitar without trying it first?
WHICH GUITAR SHOULD YOU BUY?
I've always felt that the guitar is the tool we use to express our magical mind. I need a deep connection with my instrument. Every time a student asks me which guitar they should have, I say the same thing: it's personal, I don't know which guitar you should have!
Your instrument has to inspire you to practice. You have to enjoy its sound and how the guitar feels. And, you know, each guitar sounds different.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR YOUR WEDNESDAY GUITAR?
I once heard a fantastic story about the Wednesday Gretsch. Let me share it with you.
It's Monday morning. Workers arrived at the guitar factory after a big weekend. That classic hangover: feeling tired, sore heads. Can you tell that the guitars made in that day weren't going to be on point?
By Tuesday, the hangovers are almost gone. The working week is starting to get there. :)
Thursdays were the supervisor visit day. Everyone was nervous about their weekly quote production! Probably not the best-finished guitars were being made on Thursdays.
By Friday, when the workers realize that they've only got that day to complete their quotes, they rush. They have to get ALL guitars in their boxes! They were leaving all the small details behind.
So - best guitars? The WEDNESDAY ones! Particularly in vintage instruments, the one with the perfect binding and beautiful soldering is the one we all want. And that's the bad news. Every guitar is different, even if made by the same luthier. Watch the story of my Vintage Telecaster. :)
NO CHOICE BUT TO BUY A GUITAR ONLINE?
It's February 2021 - pandemic stuff. We can't go to the store and try all available mid-price acoustics, right?
And - also because it's 2021! - we just can't think that the guitar production is what it used to be. We used to imagine that a passionate luthier made each guitar. That's just not true anymore.
The good news is that guitar production standards have increased over the years. Nowadays, the guitar production quality is off the scale! Even cheaper guitars will have a decent sound right out of the box. Most of them will come with low-action, and it's pretty unlikely you'll encounter any significant problem.
So, if you have to buy a guitar online - just do it! If you have the chance to go to a store, even better. Try out all the guitars you can. Find your Wednesday guitar. If you need help choosing your first guitar, check out this lesson. :)
I BUY ONLINE TOO!
I've just got a new baby from Solo Dallas - stay tuned to her public inauguration event! She's just arrived, and, oh, man...
