I've been drooling over guitars for the last 35 years, and I have to say that buying a guitar online was never so tempting as it is nowadays. Beautiful high-resolution guitar images, irresistible descriptions, and good deals are on the Internet. But should you buy a guitar without trying it first?

Which Guitar Should You Buy?

I've always felt that the guitar is the tool to express our musical mind. I need a deep connection with my instrument. Whenever a student asks me which guitar they should have, I say the same thing: "it's personal; I don't know which guitar you should have!"

Your instrument has to inspire you to practice, and you'll want to enjoy its sound and feel. And every guitar sounds different!

I once heard a fantastic story about the Wednesday Gretsch. Let me share it with you.

📖 Story Time: Wednesday Guitars!

Workers arrive at the guitar factory after a big weekend on Monday mornings. They have the classic hangover: tiredness, sore head. The guitars they make on Mondays aren't going to be on point, are they?

By Tuesday, the hangovers are almost gone, but the workers are still suffering a little. And so is the quality of the guitars. :)

Thursday comes, and the supervisor pays the worker a visit. Everyone is nervous about their weekly quota! They're told they need hundreds of guitars out the door by Friday afternoon, so they start rushing! Thursday guitars probably aren't the best either.

By Friday, when the workers realize they've only got that day to meet the quota, they forget about quality. They have to get ALL the guitars in their boxes! They leave all the small details behind and get them out the door at all costs.

So – the best guitars? The ones made on WEDNESDAY! Particularly in vintage instruments, we want the one with the perfect binding and beautiful soldering. And that's the bad news: every guitar is different.

No Choice But To Buy Your Guitar Online?

It's February 2021 – pandemic time. We can't go to the store and try all their mid-price acoustics, right?

And – also because it's 2021! – we can't think that guitar production is what it used to be. We used to imagine that a passionate luthier lovingly made each guitar. That's not true anymore.

The good news is that guitar production standards have increased over the years. Nowadays, quality is off the scale! Even cheaper guitars sound good right out of the box. Most of them will come with low action, and you'll unlikely find any serious problems.

🎸 I buy online too! I've just got a new baby from Solo Dallas. Oh goodness...

So, if you have to buy a guitar online – do it! If you have the chance to go to a store, even better. Try out all the guitars you can. Find your Wednesday guitar.
