Happier by Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is a super talented guitarist and musician, and his songs can get a bit layered and complex. “Happier” is one of his simpler tunes, though – or at least, it can be. This song is perfect for an advanced beginner, or someone who’s still working on the basics but is ready to start adding in some more interesting flairs.

In its humblest form, the chord structure of the song is straightforward enough for most beginners to play through. In fact, if you’re just learning the F bar chord, this is a great song to try. With an Am-F-C progression in the beginning, it’s perfect for those of you who are looking for a little extra practice switching in and out of F.

For those of you who are a bit more advanced or if you’re up for a bigger challenge, I also dive into the finger-style version of this song. With plenty of opportunities for hammer-ons, flairs, and dynamic changes, you can really play around with the sound and personality of the tune. Ed Sheeran is really great at voicing, so give his original a listen and see what you can learn from what he’s done.

As with anything, practice is key! If there are some concepts and techniques in here that don’t come too easily to you at first, just take them nice and slow. You’ll get it sooner than you think, I promise.
