Who’s ready for another beginner’s level play-along?

“Kinky Afro” by Happy Mondays is a fun one that’s simple enough to get through – it only uses two chords, E minor and A major. The song itself is kind of funny, especially if you get a chance to check out the video (it’s linked right over there on the side for you!).

With the chords super simple, try playing around with dynamics on this one. Maybe keep the verses a little more chilled out while amping things up for the chorus. To do this, you can alter the strum pattern, adjust the weight of your strumming hand, or maybe even focus on the thicker or the thinner strings for different sections.

Of course, we’ve got it here with a midi backing track, which I’m sure some of you won’t be thrilled about, but it can be good to play with a backing tracks so you can hear an entire song come together while you’re practising. I find a lot of my beginner students really enjoy this. At the very least, it’s heaps more fun than just strumming chords and running practice exercises!

And that’s really the whole point of these BSCA (Beginner Song Course App) videos. We’re here to get you through the beginner hump of knowing a bunch of chords but not getting to do anything exciting with them or hear them in action.

If you haven’t already, you can check out the app here for this and tons more play-alongs for beginners!
